Day 14: Zaterdag 24 mei 2014
Placencia

Around 1 am I got up. I had read on the Internet that there would be some kind of meteor shower. Despite the reasonable clear sky there was still too much stray light to see it properly. I saw enough stars, but clear stripes, serving as a tail behind a meteorite, I saw not. Very vague I thought to see 2 stripes, but that may also have been illusions. After a quarter of an hour suddenly a lot of clouds appeared and I went back to sleep until 6.30 am.

After breakfast I was picked up for a tour to the Jaguar Reserve. This time we drove to the North where many discontinued construction work is to see. This includes a new international airport at Riverdale. Also a building project of houses and is stopped. They have removed many mangroves and now it turned out the homes to sag. After 45 minutes we arrived at the park. After the storm of 1961 the forest was destroyed. It was decided to grow the forest again. Previously there was already a lot of logging. Also it turned out to be a good place to house the Jaguars, because the area was big enough.

First we visited the visitor center with information. Outside there are two cages that were used to capture the Jaguars if that was necessary. Then we walked around here for 2 hours. In the reserve life 60 to 80 Jaguars. They are protected here. The forest is pretty big, but there is no migration outside the area because there are no corridors to other areas. The guide explained about the healing powers of plants and showed us some fruits that could be eaten. We heard a lot of birds, but they were difficult to see. A bush-Turkey was the most beautiful one. In itself is a very beautiful place, where you can also camp. There were also sufficient volunteers who work here every now and then. As nature lover it is surely a nice place to be here longer.

After the walk we went to lunch and afterwards with a tube (inner tube of a truck) we went down the river. The water was low and it went so pretty slow. Occasionally I even had to lie flat to prevent my ass hit some rocks. In the rainy season the river would be more challenging according to the guide. Nice to see the forest from another perspective, but apart from some bats on a tree, there was little wildlife to see.

After an hour was also this tour to an end and we drove back to the hotel and on our way we saw a couple of a kind of raccoon crossing the road. Around 3 pm I was back again. I did some reading and after dinner I listened to music and went to sleep.
