Day 2: Zondag 30 augustus 2015
Vancouver

I was already awake around 3:30 AM. I tried to get some more sleep, but I could not. The time difference of eight hours is still having its effect. Outside I smoked a cigarrillo (inside you can not smoke here). It was still dark. There were some taxis and trolleybuses driving around. After a shower I booked digitally a hotel in Victoria, took a shower did some reading. Around 7:40 AM I went for breakfast. It was a buffet and ate quietly.

Around 8:30 AM I left and went by car to Stanley park. I first went to the Lost Lagoon, a freshwater lake in the park. There were several ducks, herons and the likewise. People let their dogs out here or were jogging. Stanley park has evolved over millions of years by the sediment from the river. Then I walked down to the marina and further around the park along the river (which it is salty). It was low tide and also there were various birds like gulls and albatrosses. The circular route is 8.3 km and on the path were many joggers and cyclists, neatly separated. The walk let me pass the girl in diving suit, revealed in 1972 to symbolize the commitment of the city to the sea. I also walked under the Lions Gate Bridge, a hanging bridge that connects with North Vancouver. Here there was already a rocky wall. Nearby, a small lighthouse. Allready by late 19th century there was a lighthouse, because ships were often in trouble here and there is even a sunken ship (The Beaver). In the river lay the tall ships I had last have seen from the air. I arrived at Siwash Rock, a small rock, with a tree on it standing upright in the water.

I enjoyed colors that appeared in the trees because of the fall. A number of branches broke of and trees fell down yesterday during a heavy storm. According to the news the storm was the worst in 10 years and thousands of households are without electricity because the trees fell on top of the power lines. I walked past a few beaches and after over two hours of walking I came back to my car.

I then wanted to go to the Aquarium, but when I saw the line of people, I just drove on. I took a wrong turn and came to North Vancouver passing the Lion Gate bridge. I turned around and drove back to drive to Chinatown. There I put my car in a parking garage and walked through the neighborhood. According to the book, this should be the biggest Chinatown in Canada. It really started to heat up, because instead of the predicted rain, the sun was shining. Chinatown indeed has many Chinese shops. Sometimes it is a dilapidated impression and poverty is literally on the street; many wanderers who make of all kinds of material, small houses.

I also walked to the neighboring Gastown, the oldest part of Vancouver. Here many old buildings, but often restored. The shopping area has been refurbished and there are many eateries and restaurants. I also walked to the Waterfront, near the station. Eventually I found a shop where they had a battery for my camera, so I'm now no longer need to worry about a dead battery preventing me from take a picture. I walked back down passing the Chinatown Millennium Gate, a kind of official port that indicates the beginning of Chinatown. I also visited a small city garden in Chinese style, al lot of water and nice plants.

I walked back to the garage and drove to my hotel. After parking my car, back to my room. I could feel my feet well after about 12 kilometers that I had walked today. I lay down on my bed and watched some TV. Eventually I went around 7:30 PM Robson street to eat somewhere. I came to a Turkish eatery and ate rice with beef. Good and cheap. Around 8:30 PM I was back at the hotel. I watched some TV and sleep around 11:30 PM.
