Travellingman reisverhalen - - Accra
Day 18: 16 februari 2006
Accra

Around 7 am I woke up. I slept well this night and I took a (cold) shower to wake up. Around 8 am I had a breakfast (eggs, bread and coffee). Around 9 am I took a taxi into the city center (cost me 30.000 cedis or 3 euro). I was dropped at the art center. There was not much to see so I just walked around. Soon I found myself almost lost on several markets. You really can buy a lot of goods here. I didn't needed much and the only thing I bought were some small bags with washing powder for my laundry. I also changed some more money at a bank. I walked in the direction of St. James (the oldest part of the town, but got stuck in more markets and a lot of people and traffic. Because it was very warm I didn't go all the way. I just looked for a map of Ghana. In a bookshop they sold a kind of schoolbook about Ghana for 50.000 cedis, but I found it too expensive. Later at the book market a salesman just had an old map for 40.000 cedis. Still too expensive, but I bought it because I wanted something to schedule my trip through Ghana.

I walked to the ocean to get a breeze of wind to cool down (it was already about 35 °C). Afterwards I walked to the Kwame N'krumah memorial park. He was the first president of Ghana and this park was erected to memories him. In a small museum you can find some books that were written by him. He had his ideals of free Africa and most of his life he fought for it. He studied in the United States and some things of that time are on display. Also quite a lot pictures of him meeting al kind of presidents of other countries and even the pope.

The park mainly consists out of fountains and a diversity of statues. In a small park (Kindu) further on at the center, I sat down for a drink. After a while I went to the nearby Novotel to rent a car, but that seemed not to be easy. For rental you only can get an insurance for the region you rent the car, but not for the whole country. They told me to figure out something for me and they would call me at the hotel I was staying.

As last part of my day of exploring Accra, I went to the National Museum. There are archeologically findings, clothes and music instruments. Also there is a display about the ritual which used to be performed by some tribes when young girls were introduced into adolescence. In the garden of the museum there is very nice display of statues. It also tell you a little bit about the slave trading, which started in 17th century.

It was already the end of the afternoon, so I took a taxi back to hotel, again joining the traffic jam going to the outskirts. There are a lot of cars and the driving style is pretty terrible. But I arrived safely at the hotel where I took a cold beer and had a cold shower.

I waited in vain for a phone call of the car rental company. So around 8.30 pm I had dinner and around 9.30 pm I went to my room for some reading and listening to some music.
