Travellingman reisverhalen - - Tamale - Sunyani
Day 33: 3 maart 2006
Tamale - Sunyani

At 6.45 am I woke up, after having a poor night of sleep. I'm not used to sleep 8 hours and despite this, the local life started at sunrise. To wake up, I refreshed myself by pouring water over me from the bucket I got. I packed my luggage again and went outside to the area behind the guesthouse. This is small area situated around an old cinema. Many taxis are waiting here. Some small stalls sell food and drinks, but also you're broken TV or radio can be repaired here. I bought some bags of water (the bags are much cheaper than the bottles) and pastries. At the room I filled up the bottles with the contents of the water bags (these bags contain filtered tap water, which is safe to drink). I waited for Emmanuel, but he did not appear at the time we agreed on. He arrived at 9.20 am and I was a little bit angry. Not only he was late, he also had been driven 80 kilometers since he left me yesterday. He explained he had to repair the car, which actually could be true. Yesterday the car made a lot of noise at right front wheel. Emmanuel is a car mechanic. He told me it was not easy to find the necessary parts.

After we filled up the tank with petrol we drove on and left the trading place Tamale. On the way we did not stop much. I took the pictures from the window. We passed a lot of villages with their typical building style. At first the sandstone houses were round, later they became square. Also the landscape changed again. We were driving south and the low shrubs of the savannah slowly changed again into the more tropical growing.

Around 12.45 pm we arrived in Techiman. This is a big city with about 1 million inhabitants. Once a week you can find here the biggest market of Western Africa. Salesmen from neighbouring countries come here to sell their goods. While Emmanuel was looking for some food, I just walked around a little bit. I took some pictures and while walking in a "shopping" street some guys playing draughts called me. I talked to them. They were very friendly. After a while I walked on and passed a big place where tro tros and taxis were leaving. I took some picture, but one guy was not so happy with that and demanded money. I didn't give him that, because I didn't even took a picture of him. I walked back to the place where we parked the car and waited for Emmanuel. Around 1.30 pm we drove on towards Sunyani.

About 10 kilometers before Sunyani we passed one of the larger barracks for the military force in Ghana. We also passed a quite newly hospital. Emmanuel proudly told he also had been in the building construction and helped building 8 hospitals in Ghana. The one in Sunyani was one of them. By the time we entered Sunyani the traffic slowed down. In between towns there is not much traffic. The course of the delay was a demonstration of students. We started looking for a hotel where I could stay. We ended up at a place called Swift guesthouse, a small place with a large drinking spot. I got a large room with a lot of comfort. I had to pay 100.000 cedi per night, which was reasonable. After I settled, Emmanuel left. I had beer at the drinking spot and after a shower (this time with real running water, if I wanted I even could have warm water). The TV did not really work, with some broken antenna's I only could receive two channels. I just lay down and listened to some music.

Around 7 pm I walked to a restaurant about 500 meters from the guesthouse. The food they served was cheap, but not of real good quality. The garden of the restaurant was lightened wit colourful light bulbs. After the meal I smoked a cigarillo and walked back to the guesthouse. After some reading I went to sleep around 10 pm.
