Travellingman reisverhalen - - West Terschelling - Oost Vlieland
Day 7: Donderdag 8 september 2016
West Terschelling - Oost Vlieland

Around 4.00 AM the engine was started and the ship sailed away from the port. A number of persons were resurrected, but I stayed in bed. The engine made a lot of noise and I could not really sleep. Of course it was still dark. A number of persons just wanted fall dry on a shoal, something I do not really solicit. The trip lasted only half an hour, after which I could sleep again.

Around 7.30 AM I was awake. I was not really in a good mood. I looked on deck and a large sandbar was in front of the ship. In itself not bad, but not very special. Some had gone on the sandplate to walk on the exposed seabed. I ate some sandwiches and then lay down on my bed, because I was suffering a rare fen morning mood. I did not sleep, but when we moved again I came out of bed anyway. The sand was gone. After being free from the sandy bottom, we run sailed and were raised the sails. There was quite a breeze and we were able to sail well. The goal was Vlieland. If we were to sail directly, we would have needed about half an hour. However, we made a turn to the south. We could sail well and the sun quickly won in power.

We went several times tack and gibed once. In itself not much work. We had lunch while sailing and were around 2.30 PM ready to enter the harbour of Vlieland. We were one of the first who moored, but were quickly followed by more large sailing ships.

After we fixed the ropes, I walked to the village Oost Vlieland. You walk along the dike and after one kilometer you are there. The entrance of the village has the option at high water to close the street so the water stays outside. In the shopping street are several old houses. There is also an old church. Just beyond the village you can walk to the lighthouse. For € 3 you could climb it, but the red lighthouse is relatively small, but it is on a hill, so you still have a good view over the Wadden Sea and Vliehorst, the nature part of Vlieland.

I walked to the other side back down and was back at the church. I walked back down the street and looked at various shops, but there was nothing I wanted to buy. At the start of the village I sat down in the sun smoking a cigar and watching the departure of the ferry.

I walked along the dyke back to the harbour. On the way I bought at a scolding a herring and looked at the various birds sitting in the water here.

Around 5.30 PM I was back in the harbour and just walk to the harbour beach. The water was low tide. It was still sunny. I went aboard and relaxed some time. Around 7.15 PM we had dinner in the galley. The food was again good, somewhat too extended in some way. After eating, do the dishes, which for 20 people is best somewhat much. We did it with the three of us, one washed off and two dried off. We had some problems with hot water, but by heating water on the stove, we solved this.

Hereafter some coffee and chat with other passengers. It was a fairly cloudless evening and again there were there to see stars. It also meant that it quickly cooled. Although it was the last night on board, everyone went to bed early. Also I went to sleep around midnight.
