Jambiani

I woke up around 7.15 am and it was cloudy. I was just having breakfast when the rain erupted. It was a steady storm and the view of the sea was limited. It took until 9.15 am before it was dry again. I picked up some stuff and walked to the Mustafa store. I had to walk around a bit, because many off the sand paths of the village had become lakes, it seemed as if the whole village was flooded. The driver was already waiting for me.

Via Paje we drove to the Jozani forest. On the way again rain. At the start of the tour it was still raining. We first went to see the Colobus monkeys (who only live on Zanzibar). According to the guide there were about 2900 of them in the forest, mostly in groups of 50. There were plenty to see. After this we walked a bit into the forest. The guide, a natural healer, told about the medicinal properties of various trees and shrubs. We did not walk far, because the majority of the forest, which has been a nature reserve since 1960, stood under water. In the meantime it had become dry, but still a setback. After this we drove to the mangrove forest, which was directly opposite the forest. Again an explanation here. There were 10 types of mangroves, about 100 are known. He told little of what I did not already know. Through the forest runs a wooden path which you could walk between the mangrove. Beautiful, but not spectacular.

Then I said goodbye to the guide and drove to the butterfly garden. It started to rain again and they told me that the butterflies would not be visible, so we drove back. Towards the coast the weather became drier and around 12.30 pm we were back again. The rest of the afternoon I spend reading. They finally came to clean my room, something that had only been limited to 1 time sweeping the room the past few days. That is a downside of the hotel. There were also some new guests, this time from Romania.

Read some more and after a shower I walked around the village around 7.30 pm. It was almost full moon, otherwise it was pretty dark anyway. There is no street lighting and most houses do not have electricity. I was looking for an alternative restaurant, but they were all closed. So dinner again at the hotel. Nothing wrong with food, but I thought it would be nice to eat somewhere else. I spoke with the musician who also eats regularly here and also stays there. After some reading it was time to sleep.
