Around 6.15 am I was awake. After a cigarette I had breakfast. I was addressed by a woman who recognized me from the hotel in Cancun. She and others were travelling with an organized tour. After talking with here and the other group members, I left around 7.45 am to walk through Campeche. It is a former fortified town, therefore many walls, but also typical buildings, all with their own story. Because it was early, not all buildings were open. Still it was possible to visit a number of them. Walking around itself is already beautiful. It rapidly started to become warm.
After a shower I checked out of the hotel around 10.30 am and drove using the toll road to Champoton. In this fisherman village I made a stop. Near the quay are many fish shops and restaurants. Further on there were all kinds of other shops and a square with a striking statue. A number of locals wanted me to take a photograph of them, but afterwards I found out it failed. After some relaxing on this square, I drove further. On the way I passed a military control. According to the soldier they were in search of weapons and drugs. After a control of my car, I could continue my journey. I made some photo stops, but visited no attractions.
After approximately 370 kilometers I arrived at 4 pm in Palenque. I had a hotel to the edge of the city in a quiet tourist area. After some relaxing I walked out into the town centre. Many shops, but nothing special. The town lies on a hill, therefore the streets are sometimes steep. Soon it started to rain. In the beginning I sheltered on a hill, but it continued to rain, thus I walked on but until I was back at the hotel. Palenque is one of the wettest spots in Yucatan, therefore rain was not surprising.
After relaxing and a shower, I had dinner at restaurant of the hotel. It still rained, therefore I didn’t feel to eat out in a local restaurant.
After watching some TV I went to sleep.
